Molecular Materials and Ceramics

Given their historical experience in boron chemistry, the research activities of this skill focus on: inorganic molecular/polymeric precursors; “near net shape” advanced 0D->3D non-oxide (nano)ceramics (Polymer Derived Ceramics including porous materials and membranes such as nitrides – e.g. boron nitride BN – and carbides – e.g. silicon carbide SiC –, fibers, nanocomposites); and, nanostructuring of materials (polymers, metals, and/or ceramics) by combining natural lithography (nanospheres and/or membranes) with chemical synthesis methods (i.e. atomic layer deposition, ALD).

The applications of these materials range from chemical hydrogen storage (e.g. borohydrides, boranes, alanes, porous ceramics) to the next generation of nuclear energy conversion power plants (e.g. boron nitride, silicoboron carbonitride, etc.), via heterogeneous metal catalysis, renewable energy, sustainable material (environmental applications) and new ceramics with high added value.
